The Basic Witch

Tis the season to channel your inner “Basic Witch” and what better way than making the namesake cocktail.

For those of you who have a deep love of spooky and mystical themes, often featuring classic Halloween motifs like black cats, bats, and pumpkins, this hauntingly fun recipe created by Aloft Denver Downtown, WXYZ, should be added to your list.

The cocktail blends the smoky and earthy notes of mezcal with the bitter and citrusy flavors of Aperol and lemon juice. Whereas honey simple syrup adds a touch of sweetness and the bitters provide a subtle, spicy kick. Overall, the combination of these ingredients creates a delicious and slightly spooky cocktail that is perfect for Halloween or anytime you want to enjoy a unique and flavorful drink.

Variations

  • If you don’t have Aperol on hand, you can substitute it with a similar bitter orange liqueur, such as Campari or Cynar. These substitutes will have a slightly different flavor profile, but they will still provide the bitter and citrusy notes that are essential to the “Basic Witch” cocktail.
  • Also if you don’t have bohemian bitters on hand, you can substitute them with any other type of bitters that you prefer. Some good options include Angostura bitters, Peychaud’s bitters, or orange bitters. These substitutes will have a slightly different flavor profile, but they will still add complexity and depth to your “Basic Witch” cocktail. You can experiment with different types of bitters to find a flavor that you like, and adjust the measurements and taste as you go to ensure that you end up with a delicious and balanced drink.
