Candy Corn Old Fashioned

A ghoulish twist on the classic Old Fashioned, the Candy Corn Old Fashioned recipe is simple to make and will surely impress guests at your next Halloween party.

This spooky twist on the classic bourbon old-fashioned was created at Bellmoor Inn and Spa a charming hotel located in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. It is a simple recipe of bourbon, orange bitters and candy corn syrup. The bourbon adds a warm and spicy note that is balanced out by the tangy and sweet candy corn syrup. While the orange bitters add a subtle bitterness that complements the other flavors in the drink. The large ice cube keeps the drink cool without diluting it too quickly, allowing you to savor the complex flavors of the cocktail. The garnish of orange peel, cherry and candy corn gives a pop of color and a bonus touch of sweetness.

Step-By-Step Instructions

  • Make the candy corn syrup* one day in advance
  • Assemble the garnish and set aside; using a pick add trimmed orange peel, Luxardo cherry and candy corn
  • Combine the bourbon, candy corn syrup, and orange bitters in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  • Shake well and double strain through a fine mesh strainer into a chilled old-fashioned glass filled with ice.
  • Garnish with an orange peel, Luxardo Cherry, Candy Corn.
  • Serve and enjoy.

Tips

  • If making the candy corn syrup do so before the day of your Halloween festivities or whenever you intend to make the drink.
  • For the bourbon, choose a high proof one or a really bold bourbon because it will not get lost against the candy corn flavors. Look for anything that’s bottled higher than 80-proof.

Variations

  • Try this recipe with your favorite rye whiskey rather than bourbon. The whiskey’s signature spice is a great complement to candy corn.
  • If candy corn isn’t a favorite, try an alternative syrup, like pumpkin or spiced brown sugar. These flavors are still reminiscent of the fall season as they include allspice, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Also remove candy corn from garnish.
